The increasing demographic decline observe over the last decades inspires the ageing society theme of the exhibition.

The demographic landscape in China has undergone a notable transformation in recent decades. The population, which experienced substantial growth from 540 million in 1949 to 1.4 billion in 2021, has entered a phase of decline since 2022. This trend aligns with broader patterns observed in East Asia, characterised by diminishing fertility rates, accelerated aging, and an overall reduction in population size. Projections indicate that by the mid-century, China may witness a decrease of up to 200 million individuals, accompanied by a steady increase in the median age from 38 years in 2020 to approximately 50 years (Minzner, 2023).
